Enterprise Taxonomy + Information Management Practices
Creating order through taxonomy for the stewards of the Internet

— The Context

The reality is the Internet that we all use and depend on needs standards and policies…

to ensure smooth operation and availability. And since the US government has taken a hands-off approach, the work falls to a committed group of individual members, organizational members, and chapters that make up the Internet Society.

— The Challenge

To create the policies that help guide the Internet’s future,

the Internet Society develops large quantities of content, from white papers and blog posts to position papers and infographics (to name a few). These pieces each have their own purpose, relevance and importance.

To optimally utilize this information and tell the ISOC story, the organization decided to redesign their external website and create an intra/extranet system. What each of these undertakings required, though, was the systematic organization, management and application of content to help solve two central issues:

  • Inability to easily find information

  • Consistent management across the information lifecycle

— The Solution

This was more than a project - it was a mission to contribute to the collective good of the Internet.

To achieve the group’s objectives, we provided comprehensive enterprise content strategy and management consulting in multiple phases.

We began by creating a foundation of stability with an enterprise taxonomy, metadata specifications, enterprise information practices guide and governance plan. To ensure our work was on target, we stress-tested the taxonomy and information practice recommendations with real users in a sandbox environment. This step allowed us to iterate and improve our work before wholesale roll out across the enterprise.
